We are raising funds to support Natallia Mikhnavets, who was critically injured in a tragic skiing accident in Gudauri on January 8

Our Natalli
Gudauri on January 8
The mountains where
«before» and «after» began.
While skiing Natalia collided with another skier, crashed at high speed into a wooden fence, was thrown off the slope, and landed on rocks. The main impact hit her face and body.
Наталья Михновец
A person who keeps moving forward even when it’s hard.
On January 8, at approximately 4:00 p.m., while descending the slope, Natalia collided with another skier.
The speed was extremely high – so high that her body completely lost control of its trajectory.
The impact threw her off the piste and into a wooden barrier, after which Natalia fell onto rocks.

The injuries affected her entire body: her face, spine, and limbs.
The femur the strongest bone in the human body – fractures only under extreme speed and force of impact.

As a result of the accident, Natalia sustained extremely severe, multiple injuries:
an open subtrochanteric fracture of the right femur, a displaced arm fracture, a spinal fracture, multiple severe facial fractures (upper and lower jaw, zygomatic bone, nose, and orbital floor), a concussion, the loss of almost all teeth, and a through-and-through tear of the cheek. All of this was accompanied by massive blood loss.

From 4:00 p.m. until midnight, Natalia remained conscious.
For many hours she lay on the snow alone, in the cold, in excruciating pain, with ongoing blood loss.

Doctors later said that the risk of death from traumatic shock was extremely high.
There was no certainty that Natalia would survive until the arrival of intensive care – the ambulance was delayed for about five hours.

When rescuers finally arrived, they hesitated about transporting her urgently to the hospital, asking questions about insurance and payment. Only closer to midnight was Natalia taken to the hospital, with words that are impossible to forget:
“We may not make it.”
The Fight for Life
In Georgia, Natalia spent nine days in intensive care. Doctors fought for her life, stabilized her condition, and performed emergency surgeries on her leg and arm.

While in intensive care, Natalia became infected with multidrug-resistant hospital bacteria – an infection resistant to most antibiotics.
This significantly complicated treatment, slowed healing, and greatly increased the risks.

Why Treatment Continued in Germany
Due to the multiple and extremely complex facial injuries, a decision was made to seek treatment in Germany.

Natalia was diagnosed with fractures of the midface, upper and lower jaws, and a fracture of the orbital floor with a real risk of vision loss. Operations of this level of complexity are not performed in Georgia. Preserving vision and achieving full facial reconstruction required specialists and technologies available only in specialized clinics in Germany.

Natalia was evacuated to Germany by specialized medical transport – a private medical aircraft equipped to transport critically ill patients. This was not a matter of comfort, but of survival.

Emergency medical evacuation was extremely expensive – there was simply no other safe treatment option.

Already in Germany, doctors performed an extremely complex 8-hour facial surgery, essentially reconstructing her face from scratch.
During the trauma, the right temporomandibular joint was shattered, which significantly complicated treatment and recovery.
The operation using titanium plates was performed on January 19, 2026, and was only one stage of a long recovery process.

What Still Lies Aheada possible spinal surgery
  • reconstruction of the upper jaw
  • dental restoration (almost all teeth were lost)
  • restoration of arm function after nerve damage
  • treatment of complications following repeat femur surgery
  • months of rehabilitation, pain, physical limitations, and a slow return to life

Current SituationNatalia is currently in and will remain for the next month at Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin, Emergency Department.

On January 26, 2026, doctors reported that the previously performed femur surgery resulted in a severe complication: the bone began to heal incorrectly, with a 30-degree rotational deformity.

On January 29, 2026, a repeat femur surgery was performed in Germany.
At the same time, there was a high risk of implant infection and therefore a real threat of losing the leg.

At present, there remains a high risk of non-union of the bone. A bacterial infection has been identified, causing serious complications: high fever, elevated heart rate, and a severe general condition.

Current Medical Clarifications
  • Jaw alignment (occlusion)
After the injuries and surgeries, Natalia’s jaw will not close exactly as it did before the accident. Even with plates and fixation, changes in bite alignment are possible. At this stage, it is important to monitor how correctly the bite forms after healing.

  • Risk of double vision
Due to the fracture of the orbital floor, there remains a risk of diplopia. Doctors are monitoring this dynamically: if double vision does not appear within 2–3 months after surgery, the likelihood of this complication decreases significantly.

  • Dental restoration and bone grafting
Bone deficiency is present not throughout the entire upper jaw, but in the alveolar areas – the zones where dental implants are placed. Bone augmentation will be required before implantation.

  • Multistage and combined treatment
To reduce the number of surgeries and anesthesias, doctors plan to combine treatment stages: bone grafting, removal of titanium plates, and implant placement – when medically possible.

The final rehabilitation plan for the face and teeth will be developed after stabilization of the bite and exclusion of double vision. This is a long and complex process requiring time and significant financial resources.
Why We Are Raising FundsThis page was created by Natalia’s close friends.

After this devastating accident, Natalia is going through a journey that is impossible to endure alone: multistage surgeries, complex treatment, and long rehabilitation – months of struggle and enormous financial costs that are overwhelming for one family.

If you are able to help – please do.
If not – sharing this story is also incredibly important.
If you can support Natalia right now – please do so.

Any amount matters. Any support makes a difference.
Thank you for being here ❤️
